Background Check Companies: Services or Scams?
You’ve seen the links for people searches and background check services when
you’re looking for a business or for an old friend in the online white or yellow
pages. For a price, they say, you can have unlimited access to information to
find a person and/or conduct a background check on them. These services promise
to go beyond the scope of information available through an Internet search that
you would conduct on your own.
Some services require that you know the person’s full name. There are also
services that build their databases on public information such as court
subject—such as a license plate number, an email address, or part of a name or
address—a reverse directory can provide you with the full name and contact
information of the person you seek.
Most of these services charge an annual membership fee starting at
$29.95. But do these services deliver what they promise?
Two online consumer guides, Consumers-Guide.to and Consumers-Guides.org, each
subscribed to several services and performed searches on themselves, friends,
relatives, co-workers, and known criminals. The investigations went across
state lines. The services promised that for the price of a subscription, the
information would include employment history, credit history, criminal records,
previous addresses, and more.
The biggest complaint posted was that the background checking services provided
minimal information for the initial membership fee, then asked for more money if
you wanted more information—despite claims that the initial money paid would
give you unlimited access to all the data you could want.
